To install the PVC you will need the following:
All items are available to order online at Builders Warehouse or Takealot. Links to products are below(click on highlighted text,) or a hardware center near you:
- A standard Measuring Tape
- A Stanley Trimming Knife
- A Black Koki marker – You can wipe this off later using spirits (Available at a grocery store near you in the stationery section)
- Methylated Spirits (Available at a grocery store near you in the cleaning section)
- A cutting board or old piece of wood big enough (wider than 61cm) so you can press on when cutting the PVC Interlit Sheet.
- Small side cutter (to cut the cable ties nice and neatly at the end)
- A 30W Soldering Iron (to make/burn the holes where you need them, holes are required to mount the PVC sheet to the banister or balustrade)
- And/Or a strong Eyelet Plier Set/Punch (To punch holes, I prefer the soldering iron as you can make the holes anywhere not just on the edges.
- Cable Ties: white or black
- Bonded Washers (To finish it off nicely and support the PVC from the pressure of the cable ties)
- Kedla Flat Bars
- Double sided adhesive CLEAR tape
Steps to install:
- Measure the area. Roll out the PVC on a clean floor (I use a single bed flat sheet to protect the PVC from scratches and dust. Make your mark with the koki pen. Use the Kedla flat bar as a ruler, being extra cautious not to cut your fingers with the stanley knife.
- Once cut to size, place the pvc sheeting on the banister/balustrade and use your koki pen to make marks where you want to make holes for the cable ties to go through. Refer to image below:
Baby Proofing Banisters and Balustrades
- You can either burn the holes through with a 30W soldering iron (I prefer this tool as the eyelet press/punch limits you to making holes quite close to the edges) The soldering iron leaves a burnt hole, and has quite a hectic smell but the hole gets covered with the bonded washers and the smell goes away quite quickly if the windows are open. The size of the holes should only be 5mm for the cable tie to go through and then back again through the same hole.
- I prefer to make the first 3 holes for the first pole and then mount that first, before burning the other holes to ensure the sheeting is pulled tight and runs flush to the next pole. To mount the pvc to the first pole, get your cable ties and bonded washers ready. Refer to image below on how to prepare your cable ties and bonded washers:
- Place the PVC Sheet with the predetermined and already burnt holes aligned to the first pole. Push the cable tie through the hole, loop around the pole and push it back through the same hole. Tighten the cable tie, do not cut off the excess cable tie until the very end.
- Repeat above pole to pole.
- Now stand back and review your work, double checking that all cable ties are nice and tight and the PVC is straight and flush. Cut the excess tie part off the cable ties with a small side cutter or very sharp scissors.
- You are now ready to mount the Kedla bars (bottom only, or top and bottom, depending on your look and budget.) Prepare these by sticking the double sided tape (as per suggested link) to the one side of the bar. Remove the film completely so that the sticky side is exposed. Once these are ready you can place this in the correct position starting one side and keeping the other side lifted so you can press down straight all the way. Depending on the length required (I just overlap the Kedla bars,) if there is too much wastage cut the Kedla bars to the correct size using a hand saw or an angle grinder is easier if you have one.
- Now its time to clean up, put away all tools, extra cable ties, bonded washers, etc in an already child-safe lockable cupboard and remember to dispose of any plastics (recycle if possible)
- You are ALL DONE & DUSTED!!! Well done on taking this important first step in ensuring your child’s safety.

Sandra Holstner –
We were looking for a budget friendly option to prevent our toddler from climbing up our horizontal balustrades which is his favourite thing to do at the moment. This product has completely eliminated the stress and has changed his behaviour completely. He has become disinterested and can’t climb at all anymore. Would definitely recommend for parents who are having the same issue as we had.
Rene van Staden –
used this product for our puppy to close of the gaps on the horizontal balustrade at the top of the stairs along with a baby gate and its been very helpful and we now atleast have piece of mind. Thank you for advising us properly Michelle. Other options were so expensive and would have done exactly the same.

We are very happy with our purchase. The instructions on the website were very helpful to assist with the installation of the PVC Clear Sheeting for Banisters & Balustrades that we purchased.
