Clear Polycarbonate – Balustrade Protective Barrier CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
⚠️ AVOID THE FOLLOWING COMPLETELY:
- DO NOT USE WINDOWLENE OR NEWSPAPER
- Direct Sunlight: Avoid cleaning polycarbonate in direct sunlight or at elevated temperatures.
- Dry Cloths: Never use a dry cloth to clean polycarbonate, as this can rub dirt and dust into the surface.
- Harsh Chemicals: Avoid using harsh chemicals, alcohol-based cleaners, or solvents, as they can compromise the material and lead to hazing or yellowing.
✔️ What you can use:
- Use a hair dryer on its lowest temperature and highest frequency to blow off as much of the dust possible.
- Then use a high quality Microfiber Multipurpose Duster, available on Takealot.com.
- The duster you use for the Polycarbonate, should only be used for the Polycarbonate, in other words, try use a duster that is as clean as possible.
- Should the duster not clean sufficiently, wash with lukewarm water and 1tsp sunlight mild soap.
- Mix together your water and soap in a bucket OR spray bottle and wash the polycarbonate using a good quality Microfiber cloth 280gsm to avoid scratching the material.
- Make sure your detergent has no harsh chemicals that could damage the plastic, such as white spirits.
- For stubborn/sticky dirt, you can small amounts of Paraffin (Kerosene based) with a clean soft cloth, leave to air dry. Only use in a well- ventilated area and ensure your child is kept away from this area until the fumes have gone.
Why safeguard your balustrades with Clear Polycarbonate?
- Wide and horizontal bars balustrades pose a likely threat to infants and toddlers as they can easily fit through the gaps OR become wedged and trapped.
- Some toddlers even climb as they get older.
- As a rule of thumb, rails should be no further apart than 8,5 cm.
- An effective baby proofing solution to this problem is installing Polycarbonate Panels.
INSTALLATION GUIDELINES:
- This is an ADULT ONLY installation process. Please ensure all kiddo’s are being supervised by an informed caregiver and are not in the vicinity at all during the installation process.
- You will need 2 people to install.
To install you will need the following:
- A cordless 18V power drill.
- 6mm good quality Steel Drill bit. This is to drill the holes into the Polycarbonate.
- A measuring tape, to ensure the order panel sizes are placed in the correct tape.
- Aswell as ensuring the holes you drill into the panels are evenly placed.
- Good quality Cable ties (the Hellermans brand is better than Quick Ties), choose the correct size (typically 305mm in length) and colour (white or black) you want.
- The cable ties must have a standard width of 4.7mm to fit therough the bonded washers.
- For outdoor installation you should use steel cable ties. Unfortunately, these are only available in 200mm lengths, but you can join them to make them longer.
- Bonded washers (Size: 6*6mm) available at Builders, refer to image below:

bonded-washer-and-cable-tie
- Pliers to tighten the cable ties
- A side cutter to cut the cable ties
- A lighter to burn the sharp piece thats left on the cable tie once cut.
- Microfiber Multipurpose Duster, available on Takealot.com. To dust the Panels BEFORE and after you install.
- Microfiber cloth 280gsm to clean the panels after if necessary.
- Lukewarm water and 1tsp sunlight mild soap: Mix together your water and soap in a spray bottle and wash the polycarbonate using a good quality microfiber cloth to avoid scratching the material.
STEPS TO INSTALL
- Prepare your cable ties and bonded washers, as many as you need (Typically pm²) inserting the cable tie into the bonded washer, as per the reference image above, with caption: bonded-washer-and-cable-tie.
- Remove the white plastic side ONLY. This is to avoid scratching as much as possible whilst installing the panels.
- Place the panel against the balustrade, with the side that still has the clear plastic attached facing you.
- Drill the holes into the Polycarbonate, typically this would be where the vertical poles are located. Do not drill right on the edge of the panel. Allow for 1.5cm space from the edge of the panel. Refer to image below:

Bonded-washer-and-cable-ties
- Insert an already prepped cable tie with bonded washer. Loop it around the pole and back through the same hole.
- Gently tighten the calble tie with the pliers. Much sure the cable tie doesn’t bulge.
- Cut the excess cable tie with the side cutters.
- Continue, by drilling 3 vertical holes down (per pole). Use your measuring tape. Or count the horizontal poles to center the middle hole as much as possible.
- The holes going horizontally required to secure the panels will depend on the length and thickness of the panel. For example, if you could only afford to purchase 1.5mm thickness (no judgement), the panels will need more attachments to make it less flimsy/wobbly.
- Once the panels are up, dust them again to remove any particles that may have resulted from drilling.
- Refer to Care Instructions further up the page.
