BEFORE PURCHASING
What to consider BEFORE purchasing your Baby Safety Gates and Extensions
- Take accurate measurements and remember to take the skirting into account.
- If there is a skirting. Take two measurements. Skirting to skirting/pole and wall to wall/pole. Refer to articles further down below.
- The maximum adjustable size of pressure mounted baby gates include the tension knobs on the sides, used to secure the gate.
Pressure-Mounted Baby Safety Gates - ARE THEY SAFE?
You may have come across some outdated articles that advise against using pressure-mounted baby gates.
However, the fact is, that these types of gates have evolved over the years; this obviously depends on the Brand you choose.
Personally, I prefer the brand Dreambaby. The manufacturers of this brand, Tee-Zed Products Pty. Ltd., have designed these gates in such a way that they DO NOT compromise on the safety of a child. I have been installing these gates for 17 years and can confidently back this up.
IN SAYING THAT, the responsibility of how the gate is installed and the quality of the brand you choose is ON YOU.
ENSURING 100% SAFETY
Here are some quick tips to guide you in ensuring a pressure mounted baby gate is 100% safe to use:
- Invest in a good quality, well manufactured baby safety gate. This is definitely not the place to try save on costs.
- Keep areas where baby gates are installed adequately lit. Invest in good quality motion sensored night lights that light up when you approach the stairs.
- Block stairs at the top and bottom with a sufficiently high gate (Minimum: 75cm.)
- If possible install pressure-mounted safety gates in areas that will block off the stairway but that are not right on top of the stairs. In other words, in the passage or before the landing.
- Use glow-in-the-dark tape for the bottom bar of pressure mounted gates. This provides a quick and easy solution to give you that ‘heads up’ to step over the bar.
- When installing a gate for an opening wider than 1.3 meters it is advisable to add ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR GATES ON THE FLOOR. To support and stop extra wide gates (with extensions) from shifting/moving on tiled floors, I use foam sealant tape available in the shop section here available per meter or in 10m rolls.
- Barrier Gate must be fitted according to instructions, included in the packaging to ensure it works correctly.
- Regularly check Barrier Gate to ensure it is secure. Adjust as required.
- Regularly check that Wall Mounts and Tension Knobs are securely in place.
- Do not use the safety gate if any components are damaged or missing.
- To clean, wipe surface with a damp cloth using mild detergent and warm water. Never clean with abrasive, ammonia, bleach based or spirit type cleaners.
- Any baby gate extensions or banister adaptors should be obtained from an approved Dreambaby Retailer. These accessories are brand specific.
