Toddlers are particularly fascinated with electrical appliances, cords and plugs. Add electrical and appliance safety to your priority list and get it done as soon as possible.
KEY NOTES:
Install safety plug outlet covers over unused electrical outlets, using both two pin and three pin covers.
Ensure all electrical cords and adaptors are neat and organized; For this you can use trunking, electrical storage boxes, double sided velcro and plug covers, both 3 pin and 2 pin.
Unnecessary extensions and appliance cords are a common occurance, especially behind the TV cabinet and in the nursery. Identify these hazards and store them away in a childproof cabinet.
Another potential hazard to be aware of are electrical wires running underneath carpets that carry heavy traffic (or tolling desk chairs), these cords can get frayed easily and live wires can become exposed causing a potential fire hazard.
Ensure that there are no cords left dangling off counter tops by mistake. Ironing should be done in a closed room that is inaccessable to a child.
Replace or fix appliances that have damaged cords or plugs.
Entertainment centre’s and gaming equipment should ideally be encased in a TV cabinet that has child proof locks installed or inaccessible, also checking that all knobs and digits are tightly affixed as this is a choking hazard.
