COVERING YOUR FIREPLACE IN SUMMER
Covering your fireplace during the warmer months with a clear barrier is important when it comes to childproofing your home. Little one’s love going up to the fireplace to inspect this “tiny house,” and to see what they can find to put in their mouths.
DANGEROUS HAZARDS
CHOKING HAZARDS & POISONOUS DEBRIS
Fireplaces naturally collect dust, small pieces of wood or charcoal and other debris, while gas fireplaces may contain decorative stones and other fire toppings that can pose a choking hazard and may even be poisonous if ingested. Add to this sharp corners and edges, as well as protruding objects, and fireplaces can present several potential hazards to young children.
BEES & WASPS
During the months when a fireplace is not in use, bees and wasps may build hives or nests inside the chimney or vent. Listen out for any unusual buzzing sounds before your little one gets too close and potentially gets stung.
If you do discover a hive or nest, please have it removed responsibly by finding a specialist bee or wasp remover in your area.
THE SOLUTION
Measure the area you would like to cover and order a clear Polycarbonate Panel to fit snugly over the fireplace opening. For a temporary installation, self-adhesive Velcro can be used to secure the panel to the fireplace. Use enough Velcro around the perimeter to ensure that the panel is firmly secured.
IMPORTANT: Clear Polycarbonate Panels are NOT FLAME RESISTANT and must NEVER be used while the fireplace is lit, hot or in use. This entire solution, including the Polycarbonate Panel and its temporary fixing method, is intended only for a fireplace that is completely cold and NOT IN USE, such as during the warmer months, or for a fireplace that is never used.
Childproof Fire Screens (shown at the beginning of this article) can take up unnecessary space during the warmer months when the fireplace is not being used, which is why I came up with this simple temporary solution.
So, when your little one’s just cruising for a bruising, our uncompromising service will cushion their fall.
