For consistent results, use the same method (oral, underarm, rectal) each time whilst monitoring your childs body temperature.
1. Prepare the thermometer.
- Test the digital thermometer when you first receive it, so as to ensure that you know how to operate it when you suspect that your child has a temperature.
- Change the reading setting to Celcius (South-Africa,) the default setting is Fahrenheit. Scroll further down the page for instructions on: How to switch your Dreambaby Clinical Digital Thermometer reading from Fahrenheit to Celsius.
- Clean the tip with a soft cloth and alcohol swab, then rinse with cool water.
- Allow to air-dry before storing in its protective tip casing.
- Store in a dry, cool place and out of direct sunlight.
- Don’t immerse the whole unit in water.
2. POWER ON
- Gently press the ON/OFF button once.
- The display will briefly show all symbols, then “Lo” with a flashing °C or °F.
- The ‘Lo’ (LOW TEMPERATURE) indication on the display means that the temperature cannot be measured because the temperature is outside the temperature range.
- It is standard practice for the majority of digital thermometers to display a “LO” sign when turning the device on. This is because these types of thermometers are made to measure Body Temperature, so when outside the body, the temperature is usually LOWER.
- Once placed in one of the methods for body temperature measurement, orally, underarm or rectally, the thermometer will give an accurate reading.
4. Place the thermometer
If you are not sure which method to use below, scroll further down to the heading: Best Method to measure body temperature by Age Group; for a quick guide on the most suitable method for your childs age.
You can measure:
- Orally (Under the tongue):
Place tip of sensor/probe under the tongue, close mouth and breathe through nose. Hold securely until beep is heard. Digital display will show temperature. - Underarm (Axillary):
Place the tip in the center of the armpit, arm pressed against the body. - Rectally (Most accurate reading for Newborns/Infants under 3 months):
Gently insert ONLY tip/probe of sensor into rectum 1-1.5 cm (coat tip with Petroleum Jelly to make insertion easier) and hold securely till beep is heard.
5. Wait for the reading
- For oral readings, wait 8-10 seconds
- For axillary and rectal can take longer, between 30 seconds to a minute.
- The thermometer will beep rapidly when a stable reading is reached.
- If fever is detected, the fever alert rapid-beep indicator will sound.
